Promoting Sustainable Healthy Diets for Transforming Agrifood Systems

INTRODUCTION

The current situation of global food and nutrition security is challenging, and, unfortunately, progress in eliminating hunger, food insecurity, and multiple forms of malnutrition has been hindered or even reversed by recent global events. Many countries, including China, have begun to pay more attention to the issue of agrifood systems and are proposing a transition to the multidimensional goals of nutrition and health, green and low-carbon agriculture, efficiency, resilience, and inclusiveness. In the past, international and domestic attention focused more on food supply, with insufficient attention on consumption. However, the consumption side, especially the dietary structure of residents, is closely intertwined with nutrition, health, resources, and the environment.

The EAT-Lancet Commission proposed sustainable and healthy diets in 2019, advocating for the integration of healthy and sustainable diets into the same framework. However, what sustainable and healthy diet models suit the Chinese population and the current agrifood situation? How can sustainable and healthy dietary patterns be promoted? These are the issues this report will focus on.

In this context, the Academy of Global Food Economics and Policy (AGFEP) of China Agricultural University, the National Institute for Nutrition and Health(NINH) of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention; the China Academy of Rural Development (CARD) of Zhejiang University, the Center for International Food and Agricultural Economics (CIFAE) of Nanjing Agricultural University, the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), the Food and Land Use Coalition (FOLU) and the World Resource Institute (WRI) jointly published the China and Global Food Policy Report.

The 2023 report is oriented toward the diversified development goals of the transformation of the agrifood system. It focuses on conducting in-depth research on China's sustainable and healthy dietary patterns. Based on cross-sectoral and multidisciplinary collaborative research, the report highlights the close integration of international perspectives and Chinese practices related to sustainable and healthy diets. It aims to provide policymakers, researchers, and practitioners of the agrifood system with systematic, scientific, and cutting-edge references for decision-making and research.
